Building A Strong English Vocabulary

There are many reasons for wanting to build your knowledge of English vocabulary, but they can all be basically summed up into the statement thatbilingualism opens doors and creates opportunities.  The ability to speak a second language is always enriching to one’s life.
But speaking English, and speaking it proficiently, are two different things.  Many non-native English speakers feel that they understand and speak enough of the language to “get by”, but would prefer to expand their English vocabulary, and the comfort with which they can converse with others.
To be proficient in a language means that you:
  • understand the basic grammatical rules
  • can translate backward and forward between languages swiftly and easily in your mind
  • can communicate and interact in quality social exchanges
Some people feel that if they don’t have a natural “talent in languages”, that they cannot build a strong English vocabulary.  Fortunately, this is not the case.  You can certainly build your vocabulary in a second language by immersing yourself as much as possible in the language, creating opportunities to practice your speaking skills, and focusing on specific vocabulary-building strategies.
